Warm up with a walk along Sisowath Quay, go in for a bit of royal-spotting at the gold-spired palace or wander the breezy hallways of the National Museum in charming Phnom Penh. | | Day 2 | Takeo | Cycle out of the city, stopping to reflect on the thousands of lives lost in the Killing Fields at Choeng Ek. Journey through typical country scenery before taking a break at Tonle Bati, an Angkor period temple that provides a lovely spot to relax for a while. Spend the night in a local guesthouse in rural Takeo. | | Day 3 | Kampot | Take an easy pedal along flat road, passing endless rice fields, waving children and serene country life before relaxing in the riverside town of Kampot. Wander through the pleasant town that is perched on the banks of a picturesque river or maybe unwind on a relaxing boat trip into the mangroves. If your muscles are starting to let themselves be known, why not indulge in a well-deserved massage at the Seeing Hands Massage Centre? | | Days 4-5 | Sihanoukville | Ride towards the beach, beneath the watchful gaze of the Elephant Mountains and in sight of the welcoming coastline. Get those legs pumping, leaving the flat behind and tackling a challenging section of winding roads and undulating terrain. The effort is all worthwhile as you cruise into the seaside resort of Sihanoukville in time for a refreshing ocean swim or a cold beer as the sun goes down. Spend a day out of the saddle, lazing on the beach or taking a boat trip around the beautiful coral islands in the region. | | Days 6-9 | Siem Reap/Angkor Wat | Return briefly to Phnom Penh and take a short flight to Siem Reap to explore the incredible temples of Angkor. Cruising around the site by bike offers a unique perspective of the remarkable archaeological wonders. Cycle around the main complex visiting the walled city of Angkor Thom, home to the mysterious faces of the Bayon, and of course Angkor Wat. Take time to clamber over the root-strangled ruins of Ta Prohm and admire the intricate bas-reliefs of Banteay Srei. Accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide, there are plenty of opportunities to ask questions and learn about the history and symbolism behind each structure. In Siem Reap, there is free time to explore the town's sights, like the landmine museum or the markets. As a final reward, consider sinking into a cane lounge at the Foreign Correspondent's Club with a refreshing gin and tonic in hand and toast to a remarkable cycling adventure. |
